eBay has just posted a strange message up on the community homepage and press page of its daughter company, PayPal. The headline is a bit worrying, implying that eBay has possibly had some kind of security or maintenance problem, leading it to request all users to change their passwords.  Paypal customer service said the message was posted and is looking into the issue.

eBay has just released an official statement confirming that it has been the victim of a hacker attack that “compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data.” It does indeed recommend changing your password.

“Information security and customer data protection are of paramount importance to eBay Inc., and eBay regrets any inconvenience or concern that this password reset may cause our customers, we know our customers trust us with their information, and we take seriously our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and trusted global marketplace.”

More worryingly, the company said the attack compromised a “small number of employee log-in credentials,” as well, allowing the attackers unauthorized access to eBay’s corporate network. The company is now working with law enforcement and leading security experts to further investigate, it noted.

Silvermyst recommends you to change your Ebay and Paypal passwords now.
